2009 TRENDS & TENDENCIES NEWSLETTER

Issue # 20

2009-10 NFL Playoffs Special Issue

The NFL regular season is history and there are 12 teams that have survived the 16 game schedule and start the march towards Super Bowl XLIV to be played Sunday, February 7, 2010 in Miami, Florida.

This is our final issue for the 2009 season and we'd like to thank all of our subscribers and other readers for their support this season and in seasons past. We try each season to improve upon preceding seasons to bring the best situational handicapping selections in a concise and no-nonsense format. We hope you've been pleased with our efforts and we look forward to having you join us once again next summer.

This issue covers the entire NFL Playoffs, from the Wild Card round through the Super Bowl. The format is rather simple and has proven effective and successful over the years. Obviously we can't know the specific matchups for any round past the Wild Card round. Thus we use a ranking method to determine which teams to use as the Playoffs proceed.

First we'll present the rankings for each round and then use the Wild Card matchups as an example to show you how we handicap the Playoffs.

Wild Card Round Divisional Round Conf Championships
AFC Rankings New England Baltimore Cincinnati
Cincinnati San Diego N Y Jets
Baltimore New England Indianapolis
N Y Jets N Y Jets New England
Indianapolis San Diego
Cincinnati Baltimore
NFC Rankings Green Bay Green Bay Dallas
Dallas Minnesota Arizona
Philadelphia New Orleans Minnesota
Dallas Philadelphia New Orleans
Dallas Green Bay
Arizona Philadelphia

SUPER BOWL XLIV Rankings N Y Jets
Green Bay
Baltimore
New England
Dallas
Minnesota
Arizona
Philadelphia
Indianapolis
Cincinnati
San Diego
New Orleans

In using the above rankings simply play the higher listed team, be it a favorite or an underdog, at home or on the road, versus the line. In the Wild Card games, for example, the plays would be on New England, Cincinnati, Green Bay and Dallas since these teams are listed higher than their opponents in the Wild Card rankings.

Just follow the same process all the way through the Super Bowl. Rankings are different in each round of the Playoffs because the technical factors involved vary according to Playoff round. Thus if Green Bay was to face Indianapolis in the Super Bowl the play would be on Green Bay since the Packers are listed higher in the Super Bowl rankings.

Since we began publishing this Newsletter in 1990 our NFL Playoffs record has been over 55% for 19 seasons which presents at least a starting point for additional handicapping/fundamental factors to be considered in making a final selection. Obviously other factors should be considered before making plays but from a technical perspective these rankings are a good place from which to begin.

We'd again like to thank all of our subscribers and readers for their support during the 2009 season and we can assure you that we will not rest during the off-season. Rather, we will be doing even more work and research to make the 2008 edition of the Trends & Tendencies Newsletter the best ever. Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year.
